Sensei told me an interesting story about dragonflies once:
One thing Japan is known for is its dragonflies. There are like thirty-six species of dragonflies in Japan, and most are active across the archipelago. Their decisive dominance over the landscape brought rise to the study of these magnificent creatures, which are now known to have the design of a warrior.
Interesting things to note about dragonflies: They can hover, and can move in all directions--except reverse. So they can't retreat. They never "sit". Instead, they only perch, and even then they can only do so on pointed stems and branches. They can capture something nearly three times their size and eat it and, when hunting, are so precise in their movements that they usually only have to move once to strike down their prey.
This brought a manner of mysticism to the Japanese battlefield. Usually during morning battles, when the samurai congregated and prepared to fight, dragonflies could be seen flying about overhead.
The yari (spear) and katana (sword), along with several other weapons that the samurai used, were pointed, so if you looked above the dawn fog at the array of weaponry just catching the morning light , you'd see dragonflies perched on the tips of the weapons.
Such images gave rise to the belief that the dragonflies were fallen spirits reborn, guiding the way of battle.
So maybe there's something to these dragonflies, eh?
Nice picture.
I not so sure about the mystical aspects of the dragonflies but they are one of my favorite subjects. As an armature aviator an RC model flier I have long admired their ability.
I think dragonflies have confounded aviation engineers for ages. To be able to move with that much precision, we'd need ornithopters instead of helicopters.
I did find the story interesting, though. It holds up against the research I've checked (since I'm not inclined to believe anything I just hear), so I thought it was worth mentioning.
Don't think this is just another news article with the usual love deviations that have already hundreds of favorites! All of these deviations don't have even 100 favorites & they're the best!
Please watch them closely and show your appreciation! @
`karemelancholia is one of the most genuine deviants you could ever met. Always active and a true deviantART cheerleader and supporter in every aspect. You can always count on her to lend a hand or get involved, and you usually will find her doing large amounts of both at any given moment. She's consistently reports on contests around dA, showcases the efforts of her fellow artists and shows her charitable side through various activities. Besides all of this, she's a truly talented artist which is why she's an obvious choice for deviousness this month. Read More

Your gallery, by the way, is quite amazing.
